Life science and business met at PHARM Connect on the 12-13 of March 2019 in Budapest to continue the tradition of providing high calibre, customised professional partnering opportunities for pharma and biotech professionals from Central & Eastern Europe and beyond and to deliver the crucial information they need to excel in their industry.

The influential annual gathering brought together over 500 global and regional decision-makers, industry executives and business development leaders from over 90 companies and 25 countries to identify new business opportunities, technologies, and state-of-the-art formulation development strategies to foster the exchange of ideas. The attendees conducted over 1,000 one-to-one business meetings during the two days.

Strategic Concepts and Thought Leadership
The gathering’s enlightening presentations and panel discussions were directed by well-known university professors and highly acclaimed industry experts from Gedeon Richter, Novartis, Sanofi, Teva, Belupo, Neurax Pharmaceuticals, RotaChrom, Pall Biotech and more.
This year’s programme was revolved around the theme of Personalised Medicine together with its possible dangers and future potentials, data integrity from a manufacturer and an inspector view, serialization with several best practice solutions, and lean principles in the highly regulated pharmaceutical industry, thus relayed the most cutting-edge findings from the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Highlighting Regional Innovations
Besides cutting edge presentations and pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings, informal activities made the networking focus of the event more colourful. The cocktail reception at the end of the first day was opened by Professor Stane Srčič from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Ljubljana, who announced the winners and handed out the 5th CEE Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Excellence Award to the Swedish company Tempix AG in the solution provider category and to Slovenian company Lek Pharmaceuticals in the manufacturer category, emphasising that these tried methods encourage professionals to constantly raise standards and come up with outstanding manufacturing excellence solutions.
Innovative Process Analytics | In the manufacturing category, the Slovenian manufacturer Lek Pharmaceuticals with the Development Centre in Slovenia which is the leading development centre in Sandoz for technologically demanding products, has won prestigious recognition for the development of a real-time particle size and shape analysis method (Process Analytical Technology Visual Inspection), which allows more efficient process control and rapid detection of deficiencies in the production of multi-layer coatings. Intelligent Temperature Indicator | Tempix AG which operates in Central and Eastern Europe as well delivered the award-winning solution in the service provider category by developing a unique, innovative barcode label that indicates if the product temperature exceeds its specified temperature limit. The range of the indicator is minus 40 to +35 degrees. The solution is very cost-efficient, based on a simple and environmentally friendly technology that benefits everyone, from producers and transporters to shops and customers. Site visit to Hungarian Pharmaceutical Companies
By joining the event, participants had the opportunity to get an inside look into the life of three Hungarian pharmaceutical manufacturing plants as an optional program. Prior to the event, visitors were embarked on a journey to the award-winning Meditop Pharmaceutical plant to Pilisborosjenő near Budapest. The company develops and manufactures its own products and offers services as a Contract Manufacturing Organisation to produce solid dosage forms in a flexible manner and provides support in development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products suffering from special sensitivity. On the same day the Gedeon Richter Biotechnology plant in Debrecen also opened its doors for the international delegation to visit the corridor of the upstream fermentation area and the new molecular biology laboratory. After the event, Sanofi Újpest facility was welcoming a group of representatives to give an in-depth insight into an API manufacturer and to present how they are using the Lean culture, simplifying their processes and how they involve, empower and motivate their 700 employees.

Overview of a wide range of Solutions
In addition, participants had the chance to get acquainted with the most up-to-date solutions to their recent challenges and compare a wide range of offers from several solution providers operating in Central and Eastern Europe in various fields from R&D to counterfeiting protection, through manufacturing automation and maintenance solutions, packaging, cleanroom equipment and pharmaceutical supply chain.
